Pixeltoys A selection of casual games

Temporal (Oren Bartal)

Temporal

Temporal has been around for some time, but I only knew about it yesterday. As a casual gamer and geek, I think twice before downloading and installing games on my computer, but this game is totally worth it.

You control a robot with a propeller on its head, who must find your way around each level by opening doors, pushing blocks and -of course- travelling back in time. Besides the puzzles there's also a story that develops as you progress in the game. If the game mechanics and time travelling are not enough to keep you playing, perhaps the story will.

BrainSplode! Prototype (Rust Red Games)

BrainSplode! is a nice physics puzzle where you control a missile launcher in order to blow up some alien brains in a cave.

As the levels progress you get more control of the missiles, which allows you to steer them through some very intricate caves.

The game is still at a  prototype stage. The developers would like to continue working in the game it if enough people is interested. If you like the game send them an email.

Here's a video if you prefer to see the game before downloading:

Super Crate Box (Vlambeer)

Super Crate Box a very hectic action platformer in which you don't get points by killing you enemies, but from collecting crates. Each crate gives you one point and at the same time randomly changes your weapon. There are many many weapons, some better than others, and this forces you to change your tactics on the fly.

I found the game a bit difficult but engaging at the same time. Your score is reset every time your character dies. You unlock levels by reaching a certain score, but new weapons are unlocked by the total number of crates regardless of your score. This means you're not starting from scratch every time you die.

From the developers:

Super Crate Box is coming to bring back the glory of the golden arcade age, when all that really mattered was getting on that high score list. Grab your baseball cap and loosen your pants, it's time to fight endless hordes of enemies and collect every weapon crate you can. Prepare for an arcade delight with interesting, refreshing game mechanics, cracking retro art and a terribly hip chiptune soundtrack.

VVVVVV (Distractionware)

VVVVVV

A platformer where you don't jump?

VVVVVV has just won the Indicade Award for "Most Fun/Compelling Game" and I coudn't agree more. It's technically not a casual game but it's so engaging -if you like platformers- that I had to blog about it.

VVVVVV is now only $5.00 (about €3.68 if you're in Europe, or £3.24 in the UK). Don't miss your chance to play this excellent game. You can try a demo on Kongregate first.

If you love the soundstrack as I do, you can get it from the artist at www.souleye.se.

L’Abbaye des Morts (Locomalito)

L'Abbaye des Morts is a great exploration platformer with an 8 bit style. Both graphics and sound remind of ZX Spectrum games.

Based on a french legend, the main character is a priest who runs away from some crusaders and ends up hiding in an abbey. With no weapons the only way to progress is to walk, crouch and jump at the right time.

Here's a gameplay video posted by the developers:

Nudo (by Hero Twin)

I came across Nudo by Hero Twin and I can't stop playing it. Actually I got stuck on level 16 so I stopped playing to write this post, then I need to keep trying.

I like to think the best games are the simplest. In Nudo you control the character with W A S D but you can also shift the blocks around you by using the arrow keys. This plus some special blocks make for an excellent puzzle platformer.

The game contains 32 levels and the developers claim it takes about an hour to complete.

Here's the official trailer:
